Meet Buckner

Anthony Buckner

Anthony J. Buckner was born and raised in the heart of inner-city Memphis, where he learned the value of hard work, perseverance, and community from an early age. Raised by a loving single mother and guided by the steady presence of a lifelong mentor, Anthony’s early experiences shaped his deep-rooted commitment to public service and law enforcement.

At just 15 years old, Anthony began his journey in law enforcement as an explorer with the Memphis Police Department. By age 16, he joined the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office explorer program—laying the foundation for a career that would span over two decades and counting. Today, he continues to work alongside many of the mentors who inspired him as a teenager.

In 2001, Anthony officially joined the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. Since then, he has served in a wide range of roles, gaining comprehensive experience across all facets of law enforcement. His assignments have included the Fugitive Division, Patrol, Gang Unit, Narcotics, Crime Prevention, and more. He rose through the ranks with integrity and determination, serving as Patrol Sergeant, Criminal Courts Sergeant, Lieutenant in Internal Affairs, Captain of Public Information, Chief Inspector of Training, and Assistant Chief of Law Enforcement.

In recognition of his outstanding service and leadership, Sheriff Floyd Bonner, Jr. appointed Anthony as Chief Deputy—the highest-ranking officer within the largest sheriff’s office in Tennessee.

As Chief Deputy, Anthony oversees the operations of over 1,500 employees and the care and custody of approximately 3,000 inmates. His leadership is marked by a relentless focus on community safety, transparency, and innovation. He is known for leading by example, building strong partnerships, and championing thoughtful, community-centered approaches to law enforcement—while holding individuals fully accountable when they break the law.

Anthony holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Bethel University. He is also a proud graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy, and has served as an adjunct criminal justice professor at Spartanburg Methodist College, helping prepare the next generation of public safety leaders.

Beyond his badge, Anthony is a man of faith, music lover, and family man. He cherishes time with his children—Anderson, Zaria, and bonus son Ayden—and takes pride in being an involved uncle, a dedicated dog dad to Ace, and a devoted fiancé to Chrystal Lynn.

With deep Memphis roots, decades of service, and a heart for the people, Anthony J. Buckner is committed to building a safer, stronger, and more united community—for all of us.
